Loc Growth & Chakras: Which Chakras

If your locs feel stuck — not thriving, not responding, not glowing the way they should — it might not just your products, routine or lack thereof one.

It might be your energy.

Before you side-eye that sentence, hear me out. Hair isn’t just dead strands atop of our heads that we style. All hair, regardless of hair type and texture, are living extensions of our nervous system, self-image, and energetic body. Hair responds to stress, intention, and alignment just as much as it responds to the TLC you give it…or the lack of.

So, let’s talk about how chakra imbalances can subtly block loc growth — and how nourishing your energy can help your locs flourish from root to crown.

In fact, nourishing your energy can help everything in your life flourish, but I’ll get into that in another blog post.

The Energy–Hair Connection (Why This Even Matters)

Your scalp is skin. Skin is alive. If you’ve been following my content you’ve heard me mention how a healthy scalp is pertinent for healthy loc growth. However, I’ve only discussed this from the perspective of your eating habits and the TLC you provide, or the neglect of your scalp.

However, today we’re going to discuss this from an energetic perspective. Your body is an energy system first, and a physical system second.

When certain chakras are blocked or overstimulated, the body prioritizes survival over growth. Translation? Hair growth slows, retention suffers, and your locs lose vitality.

Growth, in every aspect of life, happens when the body feels safe, clear, and supported.

That’s where chakra alignment comes in.

The 3 Chakras Most Connected to Loc Growth

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara): The Foundation of Growth

Location: Base of spine
Color: Red
Controls: Safety, stability, self-image, grounding

The Root Chakra is the first and lowest chakra in our energetic system. It grounds us to our earthly existence. This chakra is the foundational chakra, helping to align and open the chakras above it. This chakra emotionally fuels our sense of belonging and how we feel in our body. Our confidence is tied to this chakra.

If your root chakra is blocked, your body is in protection mode. Chronic stress, insecurity, financial worry, or feeling “ungrounded” can all disrupt this energy center.

How it shows up in your locs:

  • Slow or stalled growth

  • Thinning at the roots

  • Excessive shedding

  • Tension in the scalp

  • Inability to feel confident about our looks

Why this matters:
Hair grows best when the body feels secure. A secure root chakra tells your nervous system, “We’re safe. We can grow.”

In addition, we tend to give ourselves less self-care when we’re stressed and distracted by worrisome thoughts. We tend to show up better for ourselves when we actually feel worthy and deserving.

You deserve to look and feel beautiful sis, you do not have to earn that! Feeling safe with a calm nervous system is the foundation to looking like your best self.

Holistic truth: A secure root chakra often mirrors a secure self-image. When you trust, honor and love yourself, your body, hair and whole life responds.

2. Third-Eye Chakra (Ajna): Intention & Awareness

Location: Center of forehead
Color: Indigo
Controls: Intuition, belief systems, mental clarity

The Third-Eye Chakra is the sixth chakra in our energetic system located on the forehead. It is the mind center that brings together our intellect and intuition.

Your thoughts shape your habits. If you subconsciously believe your hair “never grows,” that belief influences how you treat it — and how your body responds.

You’d be surprised how feeling good about yourself will translate on to your looks a lot faster and easier than you trying to achieve that feeling from the outside in.

How imbalance shows up in loc care:

  • Over-manipulation or neglect

  • Constantly switching routines

  • Distrust in your own intuition

  • Inconsistent care

Energetic block: Mental clutter and self-doubt disrupt consistency — and consistency is everything in loc maintenance.

3. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): Flow & Connection

Location: Top of head
Color: Violet or white
Controls: Higher awareness, surrender, spiritual flow

The crown chakra is the seventh and last of the primary chakras. It is our consciousness, our connection to the Divine. It propels us to a higher state of being, one of ease, flow, spirit and unity.

You cannot have healthy, beautiful hair if your consciousness is enveloped in disdain towards your hair or self or despair because you have not embraced your unique hair.

You absolutely must have high, lovely thoughts about yourself and your hair if you want your hair to reflect vitality, beauty and health.

The crown chakra governs the energetic gateway of the scalp itself. When blocked, energy stagnates — including circulation and vitality.

How it shows up in your locs:

  • Dryness that won’t budge

  • Dullness despite good products

  • Feeling disconnected from your hair journey

  • Inability to embrace your unique hair type/ comparing yourself to others

Key insight:
Healthy locs thrive when you stop forcing growth and allow flow. The crown chakra reminds us that growth is a partnership, not a battle.

Glow Alchemy: Align First, Nourish Second

Here’s the part most people get wrong:
You can’t outperform poor energy (negative thoughts, feelings and words).

Energy work enhances good care — it doesn’t replace it.

Step 1: Chakra-Specific Practices

  • Root: Grounding oils (castor, vetiver), affirmations of safety, accepting yourself fully and the world around you

  • Third-Eye: Intentional wash days, visualization, journaling beliefs about hair

  • Crown: Quiet moments during scalp care, breathwork, surrendering timelines, keeping thoughts about your hair positive

Step 2: Physical Nourishment

  • Clean scalp (clarify when needed)

  • Moisture + hydration

  • Gentle scalp massage to increase circulation

This is Glow Alchemy — tending to the physical and energetic body so your locs can respond fully.

Why Confidence Is the Real Growth Secret

Here’s the real talk moment.

People with thriving locs aren’t just doing the “right” routine — they trust themselves. They move with patience. They stop obsessing and start aligning.

They embrace their unique beauty and journey and do not compare their hair or beauty to anyone else’s.

When your root is secure, your mind is clear, and your energy is flowing, growth becomes inevitable.

Not rushed or forced.
Trust the process. Trust that your hair goals are inevitable.

Lastly, if your locs aren’t looking or feeling the way you would desire them to, it might not just be your regimen. Your locs aren’t fighting against you. They’re communicating with you.

Sometimes they’re asking for moisture.
Sometimes they’re asking for rest; less tension and manipulation.
And sometimes… they’re asking for alignment. Alignment of your positive self-loving thoughts, words, feelings and healthy hair routine.

Consider a holistic approach to your hair care and beauty routine and watch how you effortlessly glow up.
